Hope Chapel

June Bug I, trans-illuminated photographic glass (2023)

Hope Chapel (2023)

Faith in the healing power and presence of nature lies at the heart of Gaylord’s history of transforming lives through medical rehabilitation. Drawing inspiration from the spacious grounds and magnificent trees at their home in Wallingford, CT this artwork reflects the universal principles of regeneration, rebirth and renewal present in Gaylord’s verdant landscape and mission. Depicting the flow of light on water, the artwork evokes nature’s presence through a shimmering window of light and color drawn into the Hope Chapel from sunlight above. The calm and welcoming focal point created by the artwork functions as a portal through which the human spirit may connect with an image of translucent vitality, tranquility and the beauty of nature.

The medium of glass allows the glow from a skylight to gently filter into the sanctuary, subtly illuminating and transforming the sanctuary into a space for reflection, meditation and peace. Soft ceiling or wall lighting illuminates the Artwork when sunlight is not available. The artwork is fabricated using a specialized technique in which the photograph is printed on several layers of film and sealed with UV light between two panels of tempered glass. The artwork is installed into the wall, viewable from both the Hope Chapel and the Resident’s Lounge.
